Mayer’s “Paper Dolls”, possible rebut to Swift?
Over the past few years, much of the public focus on John Mayer has either been on the women in his life or on health of his voice. Finally, with the release of “Paper Dolls”, we are back to talking about his music. Since Room for Squares and Heavier Things, every Mayer album has had throwback genre themes to them. Think Continuum and Trio, had an obvious blue feel to them, Battle Studies felt more like an ode to Fleetwood Mac, and Born and Raised was his earthy, granola, Americana album.
Now, with the first listen on “Paper Doll”, we feel like this could be the dawn of a modern jazz album. The song is saturated with repeated guitar loops, but the lyrics are traditional Mayer. One could make the reference that this song could be a counter to Taylor Swift’s “Dear John”. With lyrics “You’re like 22 girls in one/and none of them know what they’re running from”, seems like a bit of a jab towards Swift’s latest song “22”. In an odd move to promote the song, he has release a “Prancercise” video with the song. CLICK HERE to reminisce about Mayer's dating history with us!
