Justin Bieber's "Baby" has gone 12-times platinum, making it the highest-certified single in history, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. But the milestone has been slightly diluted by that fact the song benefited from the RIAA's new change to incorporate on-demand streaming data into the digital sales component of its analysis.
They are now counting 100 streams as equivalent to one download, meaning Bieber's 857 million views on Vevo now count toward his total.
"Baby" officially knocked down previous record-holder Elton John's double-sided "Candle in the Wind"/"Something About the Way You Look Tonight." It was certified eleven-times platinum in 1997, the last time any song broke the certification record.
